Age Factor in Sex Education

As balanced nutritious diet is a must for a healthy life, similarly satisfying sexual desires is also essential for a sound mental health. If it remains unfulfilled, youngsters would resort to means not proper to achieve it and become victims of problems such as Nightfall, Prameha, Epilepsy, Impotency, AIDS, etc. Bound by customs and traditions, we Indians avoid talking about sex as an educational requirement. This leads the youngster to rely on whatever information he gets through peers and books. With the growing threat of sexual ailments and resulting consequences, 'Sex Education' at the right age has become need of the hour. Education on sex is not only the duty of parents towards their children but also of the educational institutes. We know that man by nature is very curious. If something is hidden behind covers, he will not leave a single opportunity to find out what is there. Once he gets to know, he is satisfied and his curiosity comes to an end. This philosophy needs to be appreciated and if sex education is introduced in the schools, with time, child's curiosity regarding the subject would meet a proper end and would subside. He would not get on to the wrong track. The Government should pursue following approach in this regard. Children should be imparted elementary anatomical and physiological knowledge of male and female genital organs and their functions at the 9th standard level. In the subsequent class, youths should be informed about Personal Hygiene related to male and female genital organs, followed by explanations about the Importance of these organs and their use in marital life, in the following year of their education. Finally, in the 12th standard, they should be explicitly informed about the sexual ailments, their consequences and treatment as well as elementary knowledge of Family Welfare aspects. No one can deny the fact that home is the first and the most important school while the parents are the most natural guru of the child. Parents should adopt a friendly approach towards their children so that youths could feel free to speak out their minds and get answers to their queries. Parents' bedroom must be separate and they must lock their room at night, so that their activities do not become a matter of curiosity for their children. All married couples should follow this norm in their house. Another precaution parents must exercise is that they should not send their children with any outsider to cinema, marriage function or anywhere else. Parents accompanying their children would be indeed very healthy for all. This would also help in checking sex related crimes against the children. Last but not the least, including Family Welfare awareness aspects along with Sex Education would be a blessing in yet another way. It will help to check the population explosion that our country is facing and ensure an all round development of the individual, family, society and the nation as a whole.
