Helping Children with Brain Tumors

Brain Tumors can be treated with radiation - but this can stunt growth by reducing the growth hormone in the child. After a long research, experts have found that in case of youngsters afflicted with Brain Tumor, younger the child during the treatment, worse are the chances of reaching full adult height. It was also found that older children were more likely to receive growth hormone treatment rapidly following the cancer treatment - presumably because they had less time left to grow. The study basically explored whether the final height of such children improved or not, if growth hormones are given when they are very young, in addition to giving it to them when they were teenagers. It was proven that early Growth Hormone Replacement Therapy plus improved schedule of administering the Growth Hormones, does improve the final height of child patients. Treating childhood brain tumors is difficult as some of the side effects of treatment can last well into adult life. One such side effect is lack of growth, which can occur as a result of radiotherapy. Normally, Growth Hormone is secreted by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain but if radiotherapy is directed towards this area then Growth Hormone levels can be reduced. The research reflects important progress in treatment for Childhood Brain Tumors and will contribute to a better quality of life for such patients long after treatment has ended.
