DO YOU KNOW ?
During Reiki therapy, the practitioner draws upon the universal energy and lays his hands on or over the patient. The energy then flows from the palm of the practitioner's hands to the patient's body and removes the blockages that are causing the illness. Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan rediscovered natural healing therapy, Reiki, in the 19th century. According to Reiki philosophy, a human being remains healthy and free from all ailments till there is a smooth flow of energy. Illnesses are caused by energy blockages in the body. During Reiki therapy, the practitioner draws upon the universal energy and lays his hands on or over the patient. The energy then flows from the palm of the practitioner's hands to the patient's body and removes the blockages that are causing illness. There is no manipulation, massage, acupressure or any other form of manual therapy performed on the patient. Reiki can, therefore, be considered as a spiritual 'laying of hands' style of treatment. Reiki has not been studied in any depth by Western science, so most of its claims are medically unsupported. Some studies have shown that the temperature of a practitioner's hands is considerably higher after performing Reiki.

A range of disorders
Those who have experienced Reiki firmly believe in it. For them it is an effective form of healing therapy for a wide range of disorders - emotional, physical or spiritual. Some of these include:
Stress-related disorders, such as headache and insomnia
Serious disorders, such as coronary heart disease and cancer
Emotional problems, such as depression
Skin problems
Low immunity
Chronic pain

In Japanese, 'Rei' means universal and 'ki' means life energy. It is believed that Tibetan Buddhists practised Reiki as a healing therapy in ancient times. This knowledge was forgotten until the 19th century, when Dr Mikao Usui, a theology teacher, who was initially trying to discover the force behind the healing hands of Christ, rediscovered it. The principles of Reiki were said to have come to Dr Usui in a vision. In honour of his discovery, Reiki is also known as the Usui system of Natural Healing.

According to the Reiki philosophy, universal energy flows through all living things. Illness occurs when there is a blockage and energy cannot flow freely through the body. An experienced Reiki practitioner taps this universal energy and channels it to remove these blockages. With these blockages removal, it is claimed, the body cells are then prompted to heal naturally.

A typical Reiki session is about an hour long. The patient sits or lies down comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner first harmonises himself with the universal energy, then places his hands on or over the patient's body at 12 key areas. The patient experiences transfer of universal energy in the form of warmth or tingling.
Choosing a Reiki practitioner
Any person practicing as a Reiki practitioner must have completed a first-degree course, followed by a second degree - or practitioner's course - taught by an experienced Reiki master. The minimum time between the two levels is about three months, but it may take much longer, depending on the person. To find a reputable and experienced Reiki master, ask friends for word-of-mouth recommendations, or question your practitioner about his training during your first visit. There is little medical or scientific evidence to support the claims, as no clinical trials have been done till date for Reiki, but people have faith in system because of proven positive results.
