According to National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), more than 70,000 commercial sex workers (CSW) reside in Mumbai, around 50,000 in Kolkata, 20,000 each in Delhi and Pune. Many more are spread in other parts of the country. It is reported that 70 percent of CSW in Mumbai are infected with HIV and each attends on an average to 3 clients every night, 30 percent of them are students. These figures give a picture of future scenario of the disease in our country. AIDS (i.e. Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) poses one of the gravest threats to mankind. In order to lead an AIDS-free life, one must know all about HIV, the AIDS causing virus, as “knowledge is the best defense”. Number of AIDS patients is increasing with every passing day. Initially it was thought that AIDS is no threat to our country due to our conservative religious society. But there has been unprecedented increase in number of AIDS patients in recent times. We are now considered to have the highest number of HIV infected persons in the world. AIDS is caused by HIV (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus), which decreases the number of white blood cells in the blood, necessary for defense mechanism of the body thereby AIDS infected would die due to minor infections. HIV spreads when blood, semen or vaginal secretion of infected person comes in contact with blood or mucus membrane of a healthy person in following situation: v Unprotected sex with an infected partner. v Transfusion of infected blood and blood products. v Use of contaminated needles, syringes etc for injections or instruments for operations, tooth extractions, acupuncture, tattoos, circumcision etc. v From an infected mother to her baby before, during or immediately after delivery of the baby. v Infected Homosexual Individuals to their partner. v Sharing of needles and syringes by intravenous drug addicts. AIDS causes a syndrome because disease consists of various signs and symptoms. AIDS virus enters T-helper cell of the blood and damages them. Any person who has the virus in his blood, semen or vaginal secretion is a Carrier of the disease and can infect others. A Carrier can live a healthy normal life for years. For HIV to be active, concentration of the virus in blood must be high enough to cause the infection. The virus does not spread by shaking hands, living, playing and eating together, nor by sharing utensils, insect bites, coughing, sneezing, kissing, embracing, bathing in swimming pool, using toilet seats etc. Risk of infection is greater in people suffering from STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) like syphilis, gonorrhoea, herpes, trichomoniasis etc, people with ulcer or sores on their genitalia or those having multiple sex partners, patients using injections with non-sterilized syringes / needles and patients of bleeding disorders, who require regular blood transfusion. PREVENTION / AVOIDING AIDS AIDS risk can be minimized through following ways : Ø Lead a responsible life. Ø Have sex with only one faithful partner. Ø Use a condom while having sex with a stranger or if it is suspected that the partner may be infected with AIDS or STD. Ø Don't have sex with prostitutes or call girls. Ø Don't take injection except from a recognized health center run by qualified person. Ø Make sure that needle, syringe and other instruments are sterilized. Ø Make sure that instruments used for operations, tooth extractions, circumcision, acupuncture, tattoos, nose / ear piercing etc are properly sterilized. Ø Infected AIDS women should avoid pregnancy. If at all they get pregnant, special care must be taken during pregnancy, delivery and care of the baby. Ø Immunization of the children for various diseases such as DPT, Tuberculosis etc must be done using sterilized or disposable syringes / needles. Ø Blood for transfusion should be tested for AIDS before giving to the patient. Professional donors' blood should not be accepted. Ø If suffering from any STD like syphilis, gonorrhoea, herpes etc, treat the problem promptly. CARING PATIENTS WITH AIDS AIDS patients need social contact and support just as others. These patients need psychological support, sympathy, care and treatment. Sometimes they may be suffering from associated diseases and these should be tackled properly. Patients should be given nutritious food, rich in proteins and vitamins to keep-up their defense mechanism. Personal hygiene is very important since AIDS victims are at greater risk of developing infections. Relatives should know how to protect themselves and how to take care of the patients. They should use a disinfectant to clean the clothes and utensils. Sexual intercourse with AIDS patients may lead to disease and so it is best to avoid sexual contact with them. Under extreme cases, use double condom properly. Blood, vaginal secretions, semen of AIDS infected patients are infective and wounds or injury in these patients need to be handled very carefully and cautiously.
