Condoms a Safeguard against Herpes

It has been once again reaffirmed that Condom is an ideal protection against all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. Herpes Simplex Virus i.e. HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection that results in painful sores around the genital area. According to a new study, women are much less likely to get infected with the HSV-2 if their infected partner uses a Condom. In the study, the participants included 528 couples that were followed up for a period of 18 months. During this study, nearly 10% of the women and 2% men became infected with the virus. The transfer rate of the infection from men to women was more than the other way round. A reduction of infection in almost 25% was observed when women had sexual intercourse with a man who used a condom, while no such difference was seen in case of men. Another finding of the study is that risk of infection was observed to increase when the age of the participants was lower, when the frequency of intercourse was more or when the infected person had Genital Herpes accompanied with lesions.
